More Than Recruiting: Why This Trip to Puerto Rico Meant Everything

I just got back from another recruiting trip to Puerto Rico, and honestly, my heart is full.

Over the past couple of weeks, I traveled across the island meeting with dozens of job seekers face-to-face. From the metro area to smaller towns tucked into the mountains, I sat down with people, heard their stories, and was reminded, again, why I do this.

Because this has never just been about recruiting.

It’s About Trust. It’s about Connecting. It’s about gaining Trust by Connecting.

After more than 10 years working with talent from Puerto Rico, something really hit me on this trip:

The reason I’ve been successful isn’t just because I can connect people with jobs.

It’s because people trust me.

And trust doesn’t come from sending messages or posting jobs online. It comes from showing up. Listening. Learning. Respecting.

I’ve taken the time to understand the culture, the language, the humor, the pride people have for where they’re from. When someone tells me they’re from Utuado, Ponce, or Trujillo Alto, I don’t just nod. I know something about that place. I can relate. I can connect.

Puerto Ricans laugh when I ask them if they prefer their tostones with “mayokatchup” or “salsa de ajo”. I’m gaining trust by showing cultural respect.

That matters more than people think.

On this trip, I heard dozens of stories. Some were inspiring. Some were tough.

I spoke with people who’ve dealt with the aftermath of hurricanes, economic instability, and frustration with political systems that haven’t always served them. I met skilled, hardworking individuals who, despite their talent, sometimes only have access to under-the-table work, what they call “chivos.”

Talented people. Hardworking people. But limited opportunities.

That’s not a skill issue. That’s an access issue.

I also heard stories, too many, honestly, about workers being taken advantage of.

Bad employers. Broken promises. Poor housing. No support. That’s exactly why I take so much pride in what I do. I don’t just recruit.

I help companies understand how to treat workers the right way, how to set up proper housing and onboarding, how to build trust from day one, and how to retain great people, not just hire them. Because when you do it right, everybody wins.

There’s something powerful about being able to bridge two worlds. On one side, you have companies in the mainland U.S. that desperately need reliable, skilled workers. On the other, you have incredible people in Puerto Rico who just need a real opportunity. My role is to connect those worlds, but to do it with integrity. To advocate for the worker. To educate the employer. To make sure expectations match reality on both sides! It’s in the Details

What I’ve learned over the years is that trust is built in the small moments. It’s knowing the culture. It’s understanding the food. It’s respecting family values. It’s speaking the language, even if I’m still learning. It’s being able to sit down with someone, share a meal, laugh, and have a real conversation. That’s how relationships are built.

This trip reminded me that Isla Talent is not just placing people from Puerto Rico into jobs. I’m becoming part of their story. And they’re becoming part of mine. To everyone I met on this trip, thank you for your time, your trust, and your openness. And to everyone who has been part of this journey over the past decade, you know who you are.
